Slovenia
Slovenia, formerly a republic in Yugoslavia, is now an independent country that joined the European Union and adopted the euro as currency in 2007. Slovenia declared its intention to leave the Yugoslavia federation in 1990 and did so in 1991 (during our travels in Yugoslavia). The culture of Slovenia is rich and complex with connections to Slavonic, Austrian, Hungarian and Italian folk cultures and their vernacular architectural expressions.
The country has three pronounced landscapes (the rocky coast of the Istran Peninsula, the mountains of the Julian and Karavanke Alps and a small portion of the Pannonian Plain) that are important factors in the development of the different types of vernacular architecture still found.
