Town in Landscape from southeast
Štanjel, Slovenia
The fortified town of Štanjel rises above the Vipava Valley in the Dinaric Karst region that extends along the Adriatic eastern shore. Within the confines of the medieval walls of the town are artifacts that date back to Roman and even the Iron Age periods. The fortified town is located in the northwest corner of Slovenia near Trieste, Italy and was created to resist Ottoman raids. The town was constructed with a set of surrounding walls and contains dwellings as well as a small forest, pastures, gardens, and a series of cisterns.
