Town from southwest gate
Štanjel, Slovenia
The principal access to Štanjel is through the portal of a truncated tower, adjacent to the fortified hilltop's dominating structure, Štanjelski grad (Štanjel castle). Construction of the castle began in the 16th century, and it was partially restored between the World Wars for official uses, by the architect Maks Fabiani. The castle incurred substantial fire damage in 1944, with subsequent renovations of one wing for use as an art gallery and other public functions.
