Vojvodina
Vojvodina, an autonomous province of Serbia, was part of SFR Yugoslavia. It remained an autonomous province in Serbia as Serbia became an independent republic in 2006. The culture of Vojvodina has connections to Slavonic, Austrian, and Hungarian cultures and their vernacular architectural expressions.
A vast part of the province is within the Pannonian Plain and occupies the low land between the Sava and the Danube Rivers. A significant development of this land occurred when the Austrian Empire initiated landscaping projects that removed large swampy areas and opened new agricultural areas. These landscape and agricultural development strategies are important factors in the expressions of vernacular architecture still found.
