Vetrenjača (windmill)
Bačka Topola, Vojvodina
Bačka Topola is a village in the North Bačka district. The village was founded in the 18th century by Hungarians who remain a majority in the town. Originally there were three windmills in the village; this windmill was built in the 19th century on a nearby site. These windmills were common in Vojvodina and took advantage of the winds on the Pannonian plain. The drive mechanism and roof structure can rotate to better face the wind. The windmills were used to grind grains into flour. The triangular exterior framing has a base wheel that rests on a track to stablize the upper structure. (photo 1988)
