Ramanski hiša (romanesque dwelling) with cistern
Štanjel, Slovenia
This house is the oldest structure in Štanjel, from the 14th or 15th century, a fine example of local stone vernacular architecture, now serving as an ethnological museum. Water is precious in the porous karst region, and the stone gutters visible on the end wall of the house channel run-off from the slate-clad roof into the prominent cistern in the foreground. Above the cistern is a stone well (bunar) enclosure that has become an symbol of the town. The street to the right of the dwelling leads further into the village.
