Drawings of Traditional Pasture Hut
Velika Planina, Slovenia
Plan, sections and elevation of a typical oval herder's structure at Velika Planina. During summer pasture months, herdsmen sleep in the central space, which includes bunk platforms and a hearth, and is outfitted for cheese making and storage. Animals spend nights in the surrounding oval, sharing their heat with the herdsmen. The inner cell is built of horizontal spruce logs while the outer oval is formed of a stone ring, with log poles spanning to the inner walls to form the extended roof. Access is from one end of the oval. (drawings by authors 1993, after V.L. Kopač dated 1969)
