Traditional Dwelling
Studor, Slovenia
The village of Studor is near Lake Bohinj in the Karavanke Alps. The typical traditional farmhouse in this area contains a central entry chamber that holds a large hearth. The hearth is totally enclosed in masonry and covered by a wooden roof. The area to the left of the entry contains a place for animals and a large hay loft above; the area to the right has a living space for the family. Above this living area are other dwelling spaces reached by stairs in the entry. The oldest buildings often have dressed log construction for the dwelling space, the masonry hearth, and timber and plank construction for walls, roofs and detailed trim. (photo 1988)
