Karaüzümler evi viewed from Mescit sokak
Safranbolu, Turkey
The Karaüzümler evi (house of Karaüzüm) is within the Haci Halil mahalla (neighborhood). The views from the house face southeast to the principal hammam and Kazdaǧli cami (mosque) below. The dwelling was constructed over 200 years ago and contains a ground level with stone walls with storage and work areas within. The upper levels each contain a central shared living space (hayat or çardak) and individual private living and sleeping rooms. The upper levels are timber framed with lightweight brick and stone that is covered with a parging material to seal the many joints. (photo 1994)
