Traditional houses viewed from Yokuşbaşi sokak
Safranbolu, Turkey
These traditional houses in the Karaali Mahalla (neighborhood) date from the early 19th century. They were constructed of masonry, timber framing, soft lightweight infill brick, and clay tile roofs. The Direndefiller evi (house), in the center, is faced with a cementitious plaster coating. This view is looking southwest along Yokuşbaşi sokak. The house to the left is the Semerci Muharrem evi and is entered from Yokuşbaşi sokak (alley). The house on the right is a portion if the Tekeler evi that projects into the eski cami sokak, an upper alley to the northwest. (photo 1994)
