Traditional dwelling with çardak, viewed from path
Akseki, Turkey
Masonry foundations and basements adapt this house to the steep slope. The construction system incorporates layers of wooden reinforcement with projecting cross members, locally called düğme (buttons). The living spaces are on the upper floor, and the most refined rooms are constructed of wood. An exterior balcony, the çardak (or ayazlık) is supported on tall wooden posts.
