Dwelling 2 with çardak, view from approach
Akşahap, Turkey
The walls of the dwelling are constructed of stone with regular bands of wooden reinforcing. The wooden bands are typically level and consist of horizontal dressed strips that occur on the exterior and interior faces of the wall. These are joined together by short wooden members that project beyond the faces of the wall and are fastened or interlocked with the strips. These horizontal ladderlike reinforcing devices aid in resisting seismic activities that have been common in the Taurus mountains for centuries. The surface of the walls have been covered with a clay plaster to seal the joints. (photo 2000)
