Dwelling 3 with çardak,
view from below
Akşahap, Turkey
The walls of this dwelling reveal the typical variety of stonework of the region. The horizontal reinforcing strips (hatıl) are connected to interior strips by the short cross-strips (peştivan) at intervals. In this case the cross-strips occur so that they are approximately at the midpoint between those on the band below. These reinforcing bands are thought to serve as bond-beams and were traditionally made of cedar. The çardak long posts are braced in one direction and small thinner posts are attached to create poles to allow lines and covers to be added above. (photo 2000)
