Village against Karst mountain
Koštanjica, Montenegro
Koštanjica is another village near Lake Skoder. This landscape view describes the karstic topography that forms the backdrop to the Adriatic coastline. Villages are sited on lower slopes, leaving more level land available for small farming or pasture plots, often terraced and enclosed by the excavated stones. The vernacular architecture of this region is almost entirely built of stone, as available wood is rarely suitable for construction.
