Sveti Jovan Bigorski, Konak gallery
Radika River, Macedonia
The monastery's imposing residential building provides outward views from its open galleries (čardaci/chardaks) and projecting bay beyond. The dark timber construction of the galleries and overhanging eaves creates deep shadows, in constrast with the white-rendered walls. A grand stone staircase gives access to the upper dining refectory, galleries, and the konak with its wooden stairs with large landings, marked by posts and supported on brackets, for access to the galleries and monk's quarters above.
