Kula Sadika R. Šehu, 19th century
Junik, Kosovo
Fortified tower houses provided security during the unstable decline of Ottoman rule, particularly for the rural Albanian population of this borderland between Kosovo and Albania. This tower dwelling has few openings below the top floor, where men would receive their guests. The projecting corner bay incorporates built-in seating for overlooking the surroundings. The construction is of river stone set in lime mortar with cut stone at the corners, window frames, and projecting bay. Timber is used for internal floor, stair and roof construction.
