19th century kula (kulla), tower dwelling
Junik, Kosovo
The tower (kula/kulla) dwellings of Junik were typically constructed in the 18th and 19th century. These fortress dwellings sit within compounds enclosed by stone walls. The dwelling interior provided stalls for animals on the ground level and living spaces occurred on the first and second floors above grade. The upper floor and roof structures were made from heavy timbers. Records conflict as to whether Junik is within the municipality of Dečani (Deçan) or a separate muncipality within the district of Đakovica (Gjakova).
