Corner of Sarafoglou Mansion, Kyriotissa district
Veroia, Greece
This mid-18th century mansion, on the right, is closed to the street on the lower level, while the upper (living) floor has windows on all sides. Stone masonry with bands of wooden reinforcement create a solid street wall, punctuated by entry portals and occasional small grilled window openings. A projecting sachnisi (oriel) at the upper floor provides views of the street; such bays are one element of the lighter wood frame construction of that level. The Sarafoglou Mansion is distinguished by its size, refined construction, and relative height within the dense neighborhood fabric. (photo 2004)
