Kyriotissa district of Old Town
Veroia, Greece
Veroia, in the Imathia region of Macedonia, has a history (as Berrhoea) dating from before 632 BCE when it was mentioned in writings of Thucydides. It became part of the Roman Empire in the 2nd century BCE; the Apostle Paul preached in the city in the 1st century CE. It remained under Roman control and then part of the Byzantine Empire in the 8th century. Some of the oldest city walls in the Kyriotissa district date from the late Byzantine and Ottoman periods, and this Christian district contains many small Byzantine churches. The oldest dwellings date from the late Ottoman period. (photo 2004)
