200 year old dwelling, beehives
Gušče, Croatia
In visiting a number of traditional houses, the beehives were given a special prominence at the entry as shown here. The simple tile shed roof over the outward hives is built using purlins to support the clay tiles.
Typically the planks and columns have stones as footings to lift the wood above the ground.
The beams that form the primary structure for the upper floor can be seen more clearly. These beams run the length of the house and rest on the cross walls that stablize the exterior walls. In many older houses the center beam often contains the date of its fabrication. (photo 1988)
