Roženski manastir (Rožen monastery), view of southern courtyard and konak (residential complex)
Rožen (Rozhen), Bulgaria
The southern (entry) courtyard of the monastery, between the konak and church, is paved with stone. A handsome fountain protected by a projecting porch (čardak) above is opposite the entry porch of the church, to the right. The two-story "monks' wing" (the konak south and east of the church) dates from the 17th century. Rooms on the ground level are wine caves and cellars, with dining room, abbot's room and monks' cells above. Clay tiled timber-framed roofs cover the konak buildings. (photo 2000)
