Rilski manastir (Rila monastery), view of stair tower and porches

One main stair serving the residential building (near the Dupnitsa Gate) is located within an arcaded masonry projection flanked by wooden porches at the second and third levels. The brickwork of the arcade arches is plastered and rendered white, with some bricks painted brown or deep red as accent bands. The contrasts of dark wood and decorative accents against the white columns and arches yields a lively architectural language. (photo 2000)
