Traditional dwelling (kăšta) with projecting open room overhanging path
Kovačevica, Bulgaria
During the 18th century additional settlers with notable construction skills came to Kovačevica from Western Macedonia, and the town flourished. Wealthier families expanded the top floors of their houses to include open-air spaces they called "ceiling potons". In this view, one tall house has a poton which projects outward above an alley to gain a desirable view. Such spaces were originally used for household chores, as there was little ground-level open space available in this dense settlement. The roofs are covered with stone panels. (photo 2000)
