Village from distance
Kovačevica, Bulgaria
Kovačevica (Kovachevitsa) is a small village in the Rhodope Mountains in the municipality of Garmen in southwest Bulgaria. It was founded in the 16th century by people who moved to avoid the Ottoman expansion into the area. The villagers originally were farmers and livestock-breeders. In the 18th and 19th century the village expanded while preserving its strong architectural traditions. The stone and wood framed dwellings have undergone conservation work since the village was designated an architectural heritage reservation in 1977.
