Traditional Shops
Mostar, Herzegovina
These Ottoman style shops each have a set of folding and pivoting panels to provide the shop with a single, full-width opening. There are two panels for each shop, one hinged to fold up and one to fold down to form a shelf. The lower panel is hinged to fold down to rest on piers and become a place to display goods or serve as an entry step. The upper panel folds up when the shop is open or lowered to meet the lower panel; in this view, on Ulica Kujundžiluk, one can see both open and closed conditions. In the closed position, with the lower panel raised and the upper panel raised, a single lock secures the panels. (photo 1987)
