Han 'Hotel Europa'
Mostar, Herzegovina
This stone and wood structure, on Ulica Kurluk, has functioned as a cafe and han (inn) at various times since 1878. When this photograph was taken in 1988, the most recent restoration had been completed and new ordinances created to protect the historic district of Stari Grad.
Many of the architectural elements reflect the proportions and details of the Ottoman architecture present in this part of the Balkans. Unfortunately much of this building was heavily damaged between 1992 and 1995 during the Bosnian war but has since been restored again.
