Narrow Shop in Stari Grad
Mostar, Herzegovina
The early shops of Ottoman times had a set of folding and pivoting panels to create both a single entry and protection from weather and thieves. There are two basic panels; one hinged to fold up and one to fold down to form a shelf. The lower panel folds down to rest on stone piers; the upper panel is hinged to fold up and is latched to the eaves. In this view, the upper panel is pivoted from the top to meet the lower panel. With the panels vertical, a metal bar is placed diagonally across the panels to secure them and locked in place. The watches in this shop, on Ulica Kujundžiluk, are placed in a contemporary case.
