Traditional Dwelling, Konak
Cazin, Bosnia
Cazin is a city in the Bosnian Krajina region. The town was an important center during the Ottoman period and a number of large dwellings were constructed for local officials. Constructed on steep slopes, the cellar (podrum) occupies only part of the ground level above; it often served as shelter for animals. The base and ground level were built of stone covered with lime plaster. The ground and upper level were divided into separate family and male meeting areas and connect to the level above with separate stairs. The upper level was constructed using timber framing infilled with wattle & daub and covered with plaster. (photo 1988)
