Agopyan Köşkü
(Agopyan mansion)
Princes' Islands, Büyükada (Prinkipo), Turkey
The Princes' Islands, in the Sea of Marmara, were inhabitated by Greeks who raised livestock and harvested the woodlands. By the middle of the 19th century summer homes of wealthy Ottoman officials and foreign businessmen started to appear. On Büyükada new European style dwellings and gathering places were built. The Agopyan mansion was built by Marten Agopyan, an Armenian banker. The mansion was damaged over time, served as a hotel and was rebuilt in the early 20th century. Prominent horseshoe arches top the building. (photo 1994)
