Tarihi evler (historic houses), Tophane mahalle
Bursa, Turkey
Bursa, located in western Anatolia, was an early Byzantine city that after the early 14th century became an important center of the early Ottoman Empire. The Tophane mahalle and Muradiye mahalle (Muradiye neighborhood) are the oldest sections of Bursa dating from the 1st century BCE. These two neighborhood still have traditional dwellings built during the 18th and 19th centuries. This narrow street, Kale Sokak, in the Tophane district leads from the Şehadet Camii (Şehadet Mosque) built in the 14th century. (photo 1994)
