Çardak, Dwelling 1, view from southeast corner
Akşahap, Turkey
The posts of the çardak (ayazlık) rest on stones set on the earth. The ground level walls of the dwelling were constructed using random stones and reinforced using wooden strips inside and out joined together by short cross members. This technique has been found in structures that date back to the Hittites in Anatolia. The upper level of the çardak is entered through the blue framed door. The open wooden trellis over the upper deck is made using simple planks of random sizes. The southern balusters extend below the deck and appear to be attached to the support joist. (photo 2000)
