Corn Crib and Granary structures
Sirogojno, Serbia
The corn crib (koš) and the granary (ambar) are two important structures of any compound, since they hold and protect food for the family and the animals. The koš is set above the earth to discourage pests from eating the corn, its open woven walls (wattle) allow sufficient air movement to protect the corn from rotting. The ambar is more solid and has a higher entry point. The precipitation in the mountains demands extended roofs on both structures to prevent damage to the food stuffs within. Typically both structures have high stone piers to raise the structures above the land. (photo 1987)
