Mekteb u Altun-alem džamiji
Novi Pazar, Serbia
Novi Pazar is an historic market town on one of the main trade routes across Southeastern Europe, and the Alten-alem Mosque, of the mid-16th century, is the town's most important Islamic monument. Beside the mosque's entrance gate is a two-story mekteb, a Koranic school. Before public education such religious endowments provided the only elementary education available, only for boys. The structure appears similar to a house, with a wooden stair leading to upper level entrance porch, but the body of the building is of masonry construction with finer detailing.
