Tara (near Kosanica), Montenegro
Above the Tara River canyon in north Montenegro, highland farms and pastureland mix with tall evergreens and lower scrub trees. Kosanica is within the municipality of Pljevlja. Animal husbandry is the economic base of small farmsteads in this rugged environment. Their compounds consist of dwellings and animal shelters, built of stones and timber, with steep Dinaric roofs to shed heavy winter snows.
