Kula Redžepagića sketches
Plav, Montenegro
The kula (tower) form is common in this part of Montenegro where neighbors were hostile to one another and feuding occurred regularly. The structure has been dated to 1671; the ground level accommodated animals, the next level was used for cooking and hygiene, and the top level for living and surveillance. The base was constructed of stone and the upper levels, projecting elements, and roof made of heavy timber and wooden planking. These sketches were developed from two illustrations in volume 1 of "Folk Architecture", a pair of portfolios, by Alexander Deroko printed in 1939. (sketches by authors 1987)
