Manastir Sv. Arhangel Mihailo, Markovi Kuli

Manastir Sv. Arhangel Mihailo (Monastery of Saint Archangel Michael) was constructed in the later part of the 12th century in Varoš near Prilep in central Macedonia. The towers of Marko (Markovi kuli) were built on the massive stone outcropping containing a fortress first built in the 2nd or 3rd century BCE. King Marko built upon this in the 14th century CE as a defensive position. The monastery fell into disrepair until the mid-19th century when a major renovation occurred. The prominent konak (monastic lodging) was constructed during this period. (photo 1988)
