Kuќata na Kasapovi
Kasapovi house
Veles, Macedonia
Veles has been a trading town since Roman times. It sits above the Vardar River that flows into Greece as the Axios River and to the Aegean Sea. The Kasapovi house was constructed in the 19th century by a merchant who used the Vardar to raft goods to the Aegean coast. The house rests on the steep slope. It contains stone walled workshops, a laundry and storage rooms on the base level and an upper level constructed of timber-framed walls covered with plaster. The upper level contains a čardak, three living rooms, a kitchen (with chimney); the extension of the čardak overlooks the Vardar. (photo 2008)
