Arabati Baba Teќe
Dervish monastery
Tetovo, Macedonia
Tetovo is a town in northwestern Macedonia with a rich history. In ancient times it was on a route that linked Illyrians of this region with early Macedonians to the east. By the middle of the 15th century Tetovo became an important town under the control of the Ottoman Empire. The Arabati Baba Teќe is a Bektashi Dervish monastery that was founded by Sersem Ali Baba in the late 16th century and was open to Muslims, Christians, and nonbelievers. The Teќe, viewed from above, is an important religious site with most of the structures dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. (photo 1991)
