Fishermen's sheds on posts,
Lake Dojran
Stari Dojran, Macedonia
Stari Dojran is a small town near the lower end of Lake Dojran in southeast Macedonia bordering Greece. These types of fishermen's pile shacks and dwellings were noted in the 5th century BCE writings of Herodotus during his travels. There is a special ancient fishing technique that uses birds to herd fish into catch basins (mandra). The techniques are still used by some today. Special regulations were put in place to counter the recently deteriorating lake in order to maintain its biodiversity.
