Ulica Samoilova (Tsar Samoil)
Old City Street
Ohrid, Macedonia
Ohrid is a town first mentioned in records of 217 BCE. In the 9th century CE the disciples Cyril and Methodius worked in the region as missionaries to the Slavs and with others formed the cyrillic alphabet. The town was an important religious and Slavic cultural capital during its long history and its religious architecture and preserved urban dwellings have been admired by travelers since the 17th century. Many of the buildings in the old town are identified as cultural monuments and carefully rehabilitated to maintain their authenticity. (photo 1988)
