Konak of Markov Manastir

Markova Sušica, Macedonia
Marko's Monastery, named after the Serbian Prince Marko, is located in the Markova valley near the village of Sušica, close to Skopje, and contains the 14th century Church of Saint Demerius. A portal gives access to the walled complex, which includes an old refectory and newer konaks (residential buildings) that frame the church. This view shows the covered well with konak beyond. The vernacular konak structure has an open gallery leading to monks' cells and other living spaces. (photo 1988)
