Refik Selja kuќa
Debar, Macedonia
The town of Debar in western Macedonia has a history going back to the second century and was an important town in the 11th and 12th centuries under Byzantine Empire control. It grew in the 16th century and became more important under Ottoman control. The Debar craftsmen and builders (masons and carpenters) were famous during the late Ottoman period as highly skilled. The house of Refik Selja is a notable dwelling constructed in the 19th century and contained a prominent čardak on the upper level and detailed wooden ceilings in the adjacent rooms. (photo 1988)
