Manastir Sveti Jovan Bigorski, Konak (residence)
Radika River, Macedonia
The monastery of Sveti Jovan Bigorski (named to honor John the Baptist) sits on a sloped site along the Radika River in western Macedonia; the initial church was constructed in the 11th century but destroyed by the Ottomans in the 16th century. The present monastery was begun in the 18th century and expanded during the 19th and early 20th century. The courtyard shows two main structures, the large meeting and dining structure on the left and the residence building (konak) on the right, that hold sleeping rooms and open galleries. The church sits in the right foreground. (photo 1988)
