Velika čaršija (old bazaar)
portions being revitalized
Đakovica (Gjakova), Kosovo
This corner shop-house awaits restoration in an ongoing project to revitalize the Çarshia e madhe (Grand Bazaar, in Albanian) area of Gjakova. Its handsome wooden construction includes a covered gallery protecting the shopfront at ground level, with wooden posts supporting upper level spaces with large grilled openings. The bazaar area is one of the largest remaining in the Balkans, dating from the late 16th century, and included a wide variety of trades along with administrative functions.
