Traditional solarium (iliakos) in the Kyriotissa district
Veroia, Greece
The solarium is a rooftop feature of certain old houses in Veroia, well documented by Professor Moutsopoulos even though few survive today. Moutsopoulos reports that original purpose is unknown although he assumes they served as an outdoor work space. The open-air, wood-framed, tile-roofed solaria were reached by interior stairs, and offered relief (view, fresh air) in contrast with the density of the old town. (photo 2004)
