Traditional Čardak with owners
Letovanić, Croatia
This is a typical log and timber čardak dwelling, with a raised and cantilevered living floor protected from the seasonal floods of this lowland region. The house, dating from the 1870s, has been renovated to add living space in the lower level, normally reserved for food storage, animals and tools. Many of these dwellings remain in the family as the young move to the nearby cities for work but return on weekends to tend the gardens.
