The approach to the monastery is from below, to the east, where only upper portions of the perimeter buildings and treetops rise above the surrounding wall. Here, at the the top-level of the largest konak, a projecting porch (čardak) and its cupola are silhouetted against the late-day sky, as is a lone occupant. The wood frame construction of these elements contrasts with the predominately reinforced masonry enclosure below.
