Boženci (Bozhentsi), Bulgaria
Boženci is a small village in the municipality of Gabrovo in central Bulgaria south of Turnovo (Tărnovo). The village dates from the late 14th century and was formed by people who left Turnovo as the Ottoman Empire conquered that city. The village prospered in the 19th century and has been preserved as a cultural site. The Popa house, constructed by a wealthy wool merchant in the early 19th century, contained a shop on the lowest level and two living levels above. The entry to the upper levels is through the gate on the left. (photo 2000)
