Kăšta (Traditional dwelling) from street
Arbanasi, Bulgaria
The curving streets formed by the stone walls of the courtyards often create situations where the orthogonal plans of the upper levels of the dwellings overhang the pathways. The lightweight timber framing and enclosures are given even more dramatic expression by the bracketed roof extensions to shade the buildings. The low western sun reveals details of the upper levels normally shaded from view.
