Northernmost Begovina dwelling along river edge
Stolac, Herzegovina
The residential quarters of the Rizvanbegović family in the northern end of the complex were constructed between 1840 and 1860. The houses are divided between men's and women's quarters (selamluk and haremluk), each around a courtyard interspersed with greenery. Their stone-clad, hipped roofs and projecting bays are characteristic of Ottoman era domestic architecture of Herzegovina. The Begovina complex was declared a Cultural Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2008, and repair to damage from the 1990s war continues. (photo 1988)
